Bissau— The Minister of Public Health of Guinea-Bissau officially declared the confirmation of one mpox case in the country during a press conference held in the presence of the World Health Organization (WHO) Representative.

Laboratory confirmation was carried out by the Laboratory of the National Institute of Public Health (INASA) and submitted for external quality control to the Department of Virology of the Institut Pasteur de Dakar, which confirmed the same result. The genotyping process is ongoing.

Ministry of Public Health and WHO joint mission covered six health regions and highlighted the need for stronger coordination, better use of resources and improved access to care

Bissau—The Ministry of Public Health and WHO in Guinea-Bissau carried out a joint mission to regional health facilities between 28 and 31 May 2026, visiting health structures in Tombali, Quinará, Bafatá, Gabú, Oio and Cacheu.

Bissau—Independent assessment recommends closure of the 2021 variant poliovirus type 2 outbreak, while calling for sustained immunization and surveillance. 

Bissau—World Health Organization organized a preparatory briefing session at the Ministry of Public Health headquarters in Bissau to support Guinea-Bissau’s participation in the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA79), scheduled to take place from 18 to 23 May 2026 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.

The World Health Assembly is the main global forum where Member States come together to discuss international health priorities, shape global health policies, and define pathways to improve health outcomes worldwide.

Bissau—The World Health Organization (WHO) in Guinea-Bissau and the Ministry of Public Health signed the 2026–2027 Biennial Workplan and Budget on 29 April 2026, during an official ceremony held at the Ministry of Public Health in Bissau.

Bissau—On 7 April 2026, Guinea-Bissau marked World Health Day under the global theme “Together for health. Stand with science.” The event took place at the Military Main Hospital “Amizade Sino-Guineense” in Bissau, bringing together government authorities, technical partners, health professionals, members of the Chinese Medical Team and representatives of public institutions.

Bissau—On 31 March 2026, Dr. Walter Kazadi Mulombo, Acting WHO Representative in Guinea-Bissau, met with H.E. Mr. Yang Renhuo, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Guinea-Bissau, to discuss opportunities for strengthened collaboration in support of national health priorities.

A shared commitment to public health

Bissau—Guinea-Bissau has taken an important step in strengthening maternal health and women’s rights with the technical validation of the Draft Law on Safe Abortion Care and the corresponding Clinical Guidelines, during a national Seminar held from 25 to 27 March in Bissau.

Bissau—The World Health Organization (WHO) has made a major donation of medical supplies, biomedical equipment and mobile units to the Ministry of Public Health of Guinea-Bissau, in support of efforts to strengthen the national health system and advance towards universal health coverage.

Bissau–Within the framework of Guinea-Bissau’s all-hazards emergency preparedness, readiness, response and resilience efforts, the acting WHO Representative in Guinea-Bissau donated a consignment of medical kits intended to treat victims of a blast that triggered a devastating fire emergency with multiple casualties. The fire occurred in the city of Bafatá on 13 February 2026, resulting in 160 injuries and four deaths.
